The Earps were hired as deputies to help maintain law and order in the small mining town, which was plagued by violence and crime.

One of the first people they met was Doc Holliday, a gambler and gunfighter who was also looking for a new start in Tombstone. Holliday and the Earps quickly became friends, and the three brothers would often team up to enforce the law.

Wyatt Earp was born on March 19, 1848, in Monmouth, Illinois. The Earp family moved westward in the 1850s, first to Iowa and then to Pella, Iowa, before settling in San Bernardino, California, where they ran a freight business. In 1864, when Wyatt was 16, he drove a team of oxen from San Bernardino to Prescott, Arizona, earning $60 for the trip.

While in Prescott, Wyatt learned of a gold strike in the nearby town of Wickenburg, and he and his brothers began prospecting. Though they found some gold, they did not strike it rich, and Wyatt soon returned to Prescott, where he found work as aTeamster. In early 1866, Wyatt and his brother Virgil became U.S. deputy marshals under Captain Hiram Clum.

The Earps served in this capacity for about two years, during which time they clashed with a number of outlaws, including Curly Bill Brocius and the Cowboys, a loosely organized group of rustlers, robbers, and criminals who plagued southern Arizona. In October 1881, Wyatt and his brother Morgan were ambushed in Tombstone, Arizona. Morgan was killed, and Wyatt was wounded.
