Parker was born in Detroit, Michigan, and graduated from high school in 1965. He then attended Wayne State University on a music scholarship. He dropped out after two years to join the Motown group the Miracles as a session guitarist. Parker’s first solo hit came in 1973 with “Could This Be Magic”, which reached No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. His major breakthrough came when he wrote and performed the theme song for the 1984 blockbuster film Ghostbusters.
