The best pre hardmode fishing rod is the wooden fishing rod. This rod can be bought from the travelling merchant for 50 copper coins. It has a 50% chance to catch fish, and the player can use bait with it.

Bait can be bought from the travelling merchant as well, and stack in 10s. 10 pieces of bait are required to fish at a time. There are 4 types of bait: Worms, Minnows, Eyeballs, and Shrimp. Each type catches different types of fish.

Worms: Smallest size fish. Can be found in any body of water. Minnows: Medium sized fish. Can be found in any body of water except for lava.
