Sung was born in Guangzhou, China, on August 13, 1927. His father was a businessman and his mother a homemaker. Sung immigrated to Canada with his family in 1930. They settled in Vancouver, where he attended school. In 1947, he enrolled in the University of British Columbia, but he did not complete his studies.
In 1948, Sung married Lily Kwok. The couple had two sons: Michael and Darren.
Sung began his career in the fashion industry working for a furrier. He later opened his own clothing store, which specialized in ladies’ wear. In 1957, he launched his own line of women’s clothing under the Alfred Sung label. His designs were popular among young women and earned him a loyal following.
Sung expanded his business into the United States in the 1960s. He opened a showroom in New York City and also sold his garments through department stores such as Lord & Taylor and Saks Fifth Avenue. His designs became even more popular, and he began to be featured in magazines such as Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue.
In 1973, Sung introduced a line of menswear. He also began to design wedding dresses, which became one of his most well-known creations. By the 1980s, Alfred Sung was a household name in Canadian fashion. In 1988, he was named Officer of the Order of Canada, one of the country’s highest civilian honours.
Alfred Sung retired from active design work in 2000 but remained involved with his company as its creative director. He died on May 19, 2020, at the age of 92.
