Ginsburg served on the Court for more than 27 years, during which time she wrote several landmark opinions. She was known as a fierce advocate for gender equality and women’s rights, and she authored the majority opinion in United States v. Virginia (1996), which struck down the all-male admissions policy at the Virginia Military Institute. She also wrote the majority opinion in Ledbetter v. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. Ginsburg was born in Brooklyn, New York, on March 15, 1933. She attended Cornell University, where she met her future husband, Martin Ginsburg; they married after she graduated in 1954. She then enrolled at Harvard Law School, but transferred to Columbia Law School after her husband began working in New York City. She graduated tied for first in her class at Columbia in 1959. After working briefly as a research associate at Columbia, she became a law clerk for Judge Edmund L. Palmieri of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York from 1959 to 1961.
